This is the first post in a series of blog posts about the tools and procedures used in tuning and maintaining pianos.
Pin Driver
Loose tuning pins have a tendency to slip under the tension of the piano string which will cause the piano to go flat and require more frequent tunings. A piano technician will determine if a piano needs to have the tuning pins driven in by seeing how well the piano stays in tune and by measuring the torque required to turn the pin. If needed, a pin driver is used to push the pin slightly further into the pinblock which will increase the torque required to turn the pin and drastically reduce slipping caused by string tension allowing the piano to stay in tune longer. Using a pin driver is a common procedure for pianos as they age, especially in areas with low humidity like beautiful Wyoming.
